All About Me- Now Introducing...

    Hello! My name is Jessica Espinal, and I am a tenth-grade student at Fort Lauderdale High School. This year, one of my most anticipated classes was this very one, AICE Media Studies. After seeing the work my sister and friends had gotten to do last year, I was excited to try something different like this course; something I can express myself creatively in. I'm not much of a film person myself, and I've found I often don't really have the patience to watch movies. A favorite show of mine has always been The Walking Dead. Rather than exploring new shows, I'd rather watch the same few over and over, as I find comfort in knowing exactly how each story will end.  Last year, I got back into my now most favorite hobby, eating up all my free time, reading! After elementary school, I don't think I picked up a book again until 9th grade, but when I did, it was just as incredible as I'd remembered. My favorite genre is literary fiction, with authors like Jacqueline Woodson, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Ocean Vuong. I've always felt that literature develops emotion better than film, and leaves a lot more to the audience's imagination. Every time you crack open a spine, turn a new page, it's like entering a whole new world, fully immersed in the story. Reading pictures is cool, too. Graphic novels like Watchmen, The Walking Dead Comics, and Saga are a few of my favorites. Music is also a very important part of my life, and anytime you see me aggressively scrolling through my phone, there's a 70% chance I am just queuing up my next songs to listen to. I love Mitski, TAYLOR SWIFT, Lorde, and Frank Ocean. I know for sure I'm not alone in this, but I always love indulging in sad music. To be completely honest, this obsession with always listening to sad music often does bring down my mood, but maybe I just like the dramatics of it all. I'm not very big on school (is anyone?) but my favorite subject has always been any sciences. Learning about the natural world is the only thing that actually interests me, and has me maybe considering pursuing a career in that field?  Last year, I completely fell off with school, so this year I'm looking to improve in basically every way. My sophomore year has already been far better, with subjects and classes I actually look forward to each day. With this newfound motivation, I am looking forward to this class and hope to turn in all my best work!

Game Plan!

 Now that revisions in the storyboard have been made, it's now come time to plan for filming! First, to actually shoot the video, I will be using my iPhone camera. The quality works well, but in dark lighting their auto-HDR makes shots look grainy. In preparation, I will need to research how to alter the camera app settings. Another must for shooting is a tripod! Since I will be filming the whole commercial by myself, something to hold my phone will be crucial. These can be purchased anywhere, but for convenience, I will buy one online.  I've also found myself planning how I will film shots! For example, I took quite some time yesterday figuring out where I can prop my camera for one specific scene. in this scene, there will be a bird's eye view shot, which has added some complications. Pitch Blog

    Here are my pitches for my short film final project. Though, most of these need to be workshopped. I have a lot of big ideas but working by myself, most of these are a bit too large scale, but I am aiming high for the production value of my project. Overall, I see many of these ideas changing in their final form but as for now, these are some of the interesting ideas for a short film I have come up with.  Pitch A: Home alone at night, a girl receives mysterious calls alluding to the fact someone is watching her, and when she thinks she is finally safe, everything goes wrong.  Pitch B: A group of friends tell a scary story about the mysterious place they are in, only for the end to reveal the “campfire story” was a real thing and not just a tall tale. My Pitch

 For my media studies final task, my first ideas for pitches all had to do with the horror and thriller genre! Here is what I was thinking. Pitch 1: A woman is seen preparing food, talking to someone else offscreen, when at the end it is revealed she is cooking human flesh. This pitch is sort of similar to a movie Ive hear about, called Flesh. I want to do something horror related, so this is what I came up with. It would incorporate gore with the props of the food. I lot would be simple to film as the focus of the whole beginning would just be shots of food being cooked. I can really focus on getting nice sound and lighting since it would mostly be stationary. With sound I could slowly build tension and clue viewers into the fact that something is not right. The final reveal  would just me opening the fridge to reveal other body parts. As I open the doors, I can also do something cool for the title. It could appear behind the doors, or show i as I close the door and walk away...
