Critical Creative Reflection

Image
How does your product  use or challenge conventions AND  how does it represent social groups or issues? My commercial very much leaned into the traditional conventions of a usual Coca Cola advertisement. It featured happy, bright imagery paired with an upbeat background song. It challenged conventions by appearing modest with a smaller setting and less professional looking videography. In my commercial, there was representation of a person of color. Other than that the tone of the commercial was light and didn’t present any major social issues, besides addressing the lack of representation in media. 2. How does your p roduct engage with audiences AND  how would it be distributed as a real media text? My product engages with audiences by using classic advertising by techniques. It doesn’t directly tell viewers to buy  the product shown. Rather, it shows the product in a positive light, therefore subconsciously encouraging viewers to buy it for that same “vibe” shown. Through imagery, I

Open Happiness - Coca Cola Commercial

Now presenting... my final commercial! After about a month of continuous work, I'm so proud to share the final result. I'm very pleased with how it came out, and to finally see all my hard work as a complete project. Just today I have rewatched it maybe twenty times, finding joy in seeing all the different techniques I used. Seems like I will probably watch it twenty times more! I have a lot of thoughts, but I'll save them for the creative critical reflection, that's all!

Reshoots and more!

Image
Most of my filming was wrapped up two days ago, but there was still more work to be done. Due to unpleasant weather conditions, some of my original shots weren't up to my standards. The grey sky made many shots appear dreary and didn't fit into my imagined commercials warm, sunny. I decided it would be a wasted effort to reshoot all of it, as a simple video filter can achieve that bright look. However, for the scenery shots that displayed the sky, it was crucial to me that the sun was shown. So today, I re-recorded those clips. I also realized most of my commercial was shot close-up, to better show the details of the product. Decidedly, I added took some long and middle shots of my set, my backyard, to add more variety to the commercial.  For the past few days, this project has been stuck at the back of my mind. Every time I come across a new commercial on TV, I get countless new ideas or additions to add to my commercial. One idea I've had is to include a sequence o

Day of Shooting

Image
At last, today was the day of the commercial shoot. After some changed plans, there have been some untimely delays. First, there was the unexpected concert I had on Saturday, then the gloomy days that followed, so filming had been pushed back. Fortunately, everything worked out just fine today, and most of the footage has been shot!      I got my actor to join me and explained the premise of the commercial to them. We then arranged the set and props, and got to work. Filming had gone a lot smoother than I expected. Each shot only required a few takes to get right and very minimal difficulty. What I also hadn't anticipated was the number of on-the-spot changes I would make. While filming I got countless new ideas to insert into the commercial. These included new angles, like an over-the-shoulder shot. Additionally, I added another scene of my actor opening the product, for the purpose of making two shots blend together. My media term knowledge had come to use! I found myself scann

Filming day is near, preparations continue!

Production blog number one, and I have yet to do any producing . Don't be concerned though, it's not because of my usual procrastination this time! This week has been one of the busiest so far this year. Despite the wonderful day off, I still have copious amounts of work to catch up on. Filming after school was never an option. It seems I get home, wind down for just an hour, and the sun is already down. So as my schedule has made it, the most ideal day for filming will be Saturday, this weekend.   The weekend is approaching, and I've been thinking a lot about the upcoming shoot. I've got my plan, my storyboard, and most of my materials. However, I worry the day of the shoot something won't go according to plan! My biggest concern is the impending gloomy weekend. As I've reiterated many times throughout this commercial process, that the natural, bright sun will be such a significant need for my artistic direction. I want that warm, sunny feeling f

Storyboard for my Coca-Cola Commercial

Image
Now presenting, the storyboard for my upcoming Coca-Cola Commercial! When creating this storyboard, I kept all the research I had done in mind. I wanted something that would contain all the different elements of past commercials, keeping parts of each. it was important to me to have an actor and somewhat of a story to the commercial. Coca-cola would never release an ad that just shows fancy shots of the bottle. Crucial it was to communicate a more meaningful message, rather than just an advertisement that screams " buy this product! ".      The first few slides achieve this, by starting with a bit of a plot. The actor, my brother, is shown sitting by the pool on a hot day, looking rather unentertained. However, it's when he looks down at the cooler of Coca-Cola, his face lights up. Right then as the cooler is opened, I will edit it to look like the phrase "Open Happiness" was inside the cooler. This was a past slogan of the company! If you couldn't tell

Planning for my Coca-Cola Commercial

Image
The time has come! Later this week, I will be filming my Coca-Cola commercial.  For the film equipment, I will be filming on my phone, and using a tripod when necessary. This will be for shots of the bottle, but for all other parts, I want a more natural-looking shot! In these cases, I would be filming by hand.  In preparation, I will need to gather the product itself. My plan is to use those bottles with the names on them, and create something interesting with that! I also would prefer those fancy glass bottles, as I think they would look a lot more attractive on camera. Another want is a cooler with ice, like in the gif I've once attached to another blog, to best show off the product, condensation, and all that. The location of this shoot is going to be my backyard, all outdoors! In my research, I saw Coca-Cola films most of their commercials outdoors, so I feel it is imperative I do the same. My commercial will feature my pool, lawn chairs and tables, and other summery things

Research Blog: Commercial Conventions

Image
For my commercial, I chose to advertise the classic Coca-Cola! In my research of past commercials, I noticed many common techniques used across them all. Camera Shots, Angles, and Movements Coca-cola likes to put a lot of emphasis on the bottle itself. Their commercials feature many close up, detailed shots of the bottle, to make it look more attractive. They close in on the condensation on the bottle, the label, the liquid moving, all to look more intricate and appealing. Pan shots are also frequent. Logos and branding play a large part in their commercials. Zooms and extreme close ups are constant. You will never see a shot without the logo or signature red bottle. The "Coca-Cola" logo is always the focus of the shots, to keep the brand memorable and recognizable.  Themes Its also important to note that the bottle isn't always shown alone, but in the hands of a person. Not only does the brand like to display the product itself, but they also tend to include people
