Storyboard for my Coca-Cola Commercial
Now presenting, the storyboard for my upcoming Coca-Cola Commercial!
When creating this storyboard, I kept all the research I had done in mind. I wanted something that would contain all the different elements of past commercials, keeping parts of each. it was important to me to have an actor and somewhat of a story to the commercial. Coca-cola would never release an ad that just shows fancy shots of the bottle. Crucial it was to communicate a more meaningful message, rather than just an advertisement that screams "buy this product!".
The first few slides achieve this, by starting with a bit of a plot. The actor, my brother, is shown sitting by the pool on a hot day, looking rather unentertained. However, it's when he looks down at the cooler of Coca-Cola, his face lights up. Right then as the cooler is opened, I will edit it to look like the phrase "Open Happiness" was inside the cooler. This was a past slogan of the company! If you couldn't tell, I'm rather proud of this idea I had. It perfectly incorporates the simple, yet digestible storytelling always displayed in Coca-Cola advertisements!
Description of Story Board Slides: 1-4
Slide 1: The commercial starts with an opening shot of my backyard. The sun is beaming down, its hot, and you will hear sounds of nature, but no music yet.
Slide 2: Cut to a shot of my actor. He sits outside, appearing clearly bored. There is an angle change, where he is shown looking down at the cooler next to him. This shot will use a low angle technique, and the camera will be at the level/perspective of the cooler.
Slide 3: Cut to a shot of the cooler, as actor opens it. When the cooler is opened up, the words "Open Happiness" appear, with the bottles of Coca-Cola inside.
Slide 4: Shots of actor grabbing, opening, and taking a sip of the product, looking satisfied and now happy.
After this first half of the commercial, I'll get to showing the product itself. Here is the chance to use all those close-up shots, of the bottle glistening in the sun. This would also be my opportunity to throw in some filler, incase my commercial doesn't reach the runtime of 20-something seconds. After a shot of my actor taking a sip and looking satisfied, we are left to the last shot. The camera will pan up over my pool and backyard, to give one final shot of the sky. Here, the words "Coca-Cola. The real thing." will be presented. Followed, by a final fade-to-black.
Description of Story Board Slides: 5-6
Slide 5: Multiple close-up shots of the product, showing off the details of the bottle.
Slide 6: A final shot of the setting. The camera pans up over the backyard, to film the sun again. Now, the words "Coca-Cola. The real thing." are displayed. Following, a final fade-to-black as the commercial ends.
As I first got to work on my storyboard, I felt a little stuck. After reviewing past commercials, I felt I didn't have the people or resources to film a commercial as extravagant as the ones I was viewing. Though quickly I decided to dial it back, and that I can make something just as exceptional in my backyard! I feel my storyboard perfectly encapsulates that warm, joyful mood Coca-Cola aims for as a brand. While filming some changes and additions may take place, but I'm looking forward to making something excellent!
