Change of Plans

A few weeks ago, I selected the song I would create a music video for. The song in question is Anti-hero, by Taylor Swift. This was back when her newest album first dropped, and I was in love with every song! However, weeks have passed. Let’s just say that song is not a favorite of mine anymore. In fact, I find it incredibly annoying. It seems everywhere I go, it’s playing. Furthermore, since it’s such a popular song right now there may be a chance someone else will be making a video for it. Anti-hero is also a very straightforward song, and I feel there isn’t many ways to go creatively with it. Basically, I will end up with a video near identical to Taylor Swift’s. While it may sound like nitpicking, I feel like these are all important things to think about when creating a project as big as this one! With all factors considered, I’ve realized I need to select a new song.

Moving forward, my music video project will be set to the song “Sinking” by Clairo! There were many reasons for this pick, but I feel a tune like this would work perfect for such a project. The theme of “Sinking” is isolation, as Clairo sings about feeling alone and confusion with her emotions. The word “sinking” is referring to falling deeper and deeper into your inner feelings, all alone. This theme would work for my video, because I’m going to be the main star of mine! I’m filming all alone, and will be the only one featured on the shots. So, a song about isolation would fit thematically. Rather than being a setback, being alone would be a derivative choice, adding another layer of creativity to the video. In my research, I found that many other music videos of this genre feature the artists being alone.

The song is also simpler. Anti-Hero was fast paced with a lot of lyrics, a common occurrence in Taylor Swift lyrics. With the ine minute section of Sinking, there are only about 10 lines, a beautiful piano instrumental in the background. Now with a new song choice, I’m feeling a lot better about this project! Planning will continue…
