Film Day
Today is the day I've been preparing for, filming! Production got com plicated, because of restraints on daylight. I was going to film on the weekend so I can do the day and night shots. But due to some issues that arrised (procrastination), I was left to do it during the school week! Problem was, there was never enough daylight after school to be able to film the day parts in time. For this reason, i filmed the daytime scenes yesterday, on Tuesday. Then I filmed the nighttime scenes today! Breaking up the production made for a less stressful filming process.
On day one, I completed the daytime scenes. The first scene was improvised, with leftover birthday balloons I had from last week. I needed to fill up more screen time, so I created an opening shot balloons displaying the number "16".
A difficulty I faced was getting proper angles. Without a tripod, the shot of the laptop scene was very difficult! I needed the laptop to be in shot, but at a downward angle, without my phone showing. Getting the camera to properly focus was also a hardship. The camera mode "cinematic" was something I discovered, and it made all of the shots look far more professional. It places focus on one subject, then blurring the background, making it look like it was shot by an actual film camera.
To transition between night and day, I created a timelapse shot of the sun setting. I did this by propping my phone up on a floor lamp and running the "timelapse" feature in the iPhone camera app. Right after, I shot another timelapse scene. In this one, I utilized an arial shot to show myself sinking into my school work, which I will add a zoom affect to in post production.
In my last few scenes, I utilized a lot of close up shots. Again with the lamp tripod, I added a new scene of me closing the birthday card. Since I was not able to find the old picture I referenced in the storyboard blog, I added a new shot. This one showed me closing a drawer of many old cards, with an abrupt cut.
Overall, I found myself having a lot of fun in the filming process! Many new ideas came to me throughout the process, and I cannot wait to see it all edited together. More to come!
