Round Three! - An Introduction

 As you already know by now, it's Jessica Espinal, back for her third media studies project! Since my last introductions, not much has changed. I still have all the same interests and hobbies, but as the school year has gone on I've been feeling a lot better. This school year started out a little rough but has only gotten more enjoyable as the months go on. It's hard to believe we are already in February when it feels like Christmas has just happened. My grades have been excellent, with all A's and just one B (thanks to my dreaded Spanish 2 class). Besides that, I have been so motivated in school to stay on top and put my best work forward. 

That being said, I am very excited to get back into the groove of filmmaking with this new chapter of media studies. We are now working on a project that is 50% of our final exam. Hearing that in class sounded a bit daunting. But with everything I've learned so far, I'm sure I will achieve a high grade with hard work. For the last two projects, I rushed and put off a lot of the work. When having a big assignment in front of you it is very easy to get overwhelmed and push it off. But after the last music video project, I come to the realization that when I fully focus on a project, filming actually becomes very fun! The last project was really a creative outlet for me, perhaps because it was something more interesting. I got to pick a song I love and put a vision of mine alongside it. 

This next project will have me doing something similar, as I get complete creative control to create an introduction sequence to a full-length film! Films are one of my favorite things, and I am especially inspired by horror and thriller elements. As soon as my teacher revealed this assignment to us, my mind went running off with ideas of what to create. With that being said, I am very excited to begin creating. More to come!

With my last few blogs, I had the task of reshooting all my unusable footage. This proved frustrating as I had already fully edited my short sequence. So, having to go back and reshoot, then take apart my project, THEN insert those clips back in, was difficult.  As I watched the horror short sequence that I had made for my class project, I realized that it needed a lot of work. The pacing was off, and the scares weren't as effective as I had hoped. I knew that I would have to re-edit the entire sequence if I wanted to improve it. It was frustrating to have to start over, but I was determined to make it better.  I began by rearranging the order of the shots to create a more cohesive story. Title Research: Midsommar

Midsommar (2019) from www.artofthetitle.com It is traditional that our fair queen shall choose… —STEV What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? During the cut segment of this opening sequence of “Midsommar” the title is actually never shown. Director Ari Aster is known for subverting genre conventions, matter of fact, film conventions in general. Knowing this, the title was likely revealed at the end of the film, wrapping up the contents of the film.  What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? In this opening sequence, only the names and credits are prioritized. No other images are shown, as just contributors to the film, that being actors, crew, and companies/institutions involved, names are displayed. This is over a plain black screen and instrumental music, maintaining focus on them with little going on outside of those words.  What connotations do these images carry? Genre Research: Thrillers

 Starting off with thriller, the genre my pitch will be following. A favorite of mine, as movies like “Get Out” (2019) and the classic “Psycho” fall under this category, I thought it was only fitting to research this one first.  CAMS  In the thriller genre, filmmakers often employ high-contrast lighting to create intense shadows and suspenseful atmospheres. They strategically use low-angle shots to instill a sense of vulnerability and rely on both steady and handheld camera movements to evoke tension and urgency. Close-up shots capturing characters' facial expressions and conveying emotions, along with tracking shots to build suspense, are prevalent techniques. SOUND As for sound, Thriller films commonly incorporate tense and suspenseful music to elevate the mood. they also like to use periods of silence followed by quick, jarring noises.
